Happy Birthday Dad

Posted by Boe Lindgren

Today is my dad’s 70th birthday. He was born in 1938, Ballard, WA. Many things happened in 1938 that had long standing impacts on America.

 ·        March of Dimes was established by FDR

·        Oil was discovered in Saudi Arabia

·        Action Comics issue #1 is published, Superman the first superhero

·        Joe Lewis knocks out Max Schmeling in Yankee Stadium

·        The last reunion of the Blue &Grey commemorating the 75th anniversary of Gettysburg

·        Loony Tunes animated short of Porky & Daffy is released

·        The minimum wage was established by law in the USA

·        Du Pont invented Nylon

·        Orson Welles broadcast of The War of the Worlds (causing mass panic)

·        MGM releases Charles Dicken’s, A Christmas Carol

·        Adolf Hilter was Time Magazine’s “Man of the Year”

Locally, the Seattle Aquarium opened with a fish and chips counter, thus the beginning of Ivar’s Seafood. Sick’s Stadium opened the home of the Seattle Angels.

A lot happened in 1938, but the one event that had the greatest effect on me was that my dad was born.dad fishin
